Information to Guide Businesses in Implementation of VOIP.

Brave New VOIP World

By Brad Hillyard

Their ads claim that you can keep your same phone number are true. Their ads claim that you can call anywhere in America, Now Europe and some other exotic places, are also true. What they don't tell you is that other customers are setting a record pace of converting to internet phone services.

Vonage, perhaps the most popular VOIP (voice over internet protocol) service, is finally starting to post the record numbers some initial prospect prognosticators predicted.

Just about everyone of the new customers report that the quality is incredible and the costs are what they were promised they would be. Unlimited long distance is one of the hallmarks of voip. This can free up anywhere from a minimum of $25 a month to our friend who manages to save $500 and has used the flat fixed cost to expand his operation and to double his marketing effort. Having a second line is also a powerful benefit and can expand even the little guys.

One of my closest friends reports to me that he was worried about his service going down, but in reporting back to me his experience, he noted that his up time was better than usual during the winter months when he usually had interruptions. He further noted that he has a cell phone and that made him feel more secure. Truth is, VOIP providers are scrambling to get their own versions of the cell phones up and playing, so I would not ever count them out of that.

Lan with VOIPAnother friend reports that of all of the evils in the world, he chose his cable company to be the provider of his "digital phone service". I would not be that brave yet, but he was even more vocal than friend # 1. What is this world coming to?? I can only image the connectivity that we will be speaking of in the near future and the expansion of the world market and the shrinking of the world neighborhoods.

I always wondered what would become of MA Bell when the baby bells were legislated into business, I did not buy into the idea that they would be challenged. Now I wish I would have bought into the local cable company. Undoubtedly they are going to be the ones that challenge for the communications, and still, most folks out there are just becoming aware of the possibility.

Jargon Buster:

VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over IP, or in more common terms it simply means "phone service over the Internet."

Internet telephony products are sometimes called IP telephony, Voice over the Internet (VOI) or Voice Over IP (VOIP) products.

VOIP is the transmission of voice over packet-switched networks. If you are not familiar with the term "packet switched networks", then all you need to know is that packet-switched networks carry all our data around, between computers both within company networks and also throughout the internet. Traditionally telephone systems (telephony systems) which predate the invention of packet-switched networks use different systems.

VOIP is also called VoIP lines or trunks.
