Free Internet Phone Number for VOIP Users
You do not strcitly get a free internet phone number with the normal VOIP providers. This may be possible with some service providers, but Skype for example gives you a Skype name. In many ways this is better, as it is easy to remember.
However, you are not normally able to go to any phone and dial a Skype number from the fixed phonme system. I am sure that this will coem in time but is not the norm now (December 2006)
Some VoIP providers permit you to call anywhere at a flat rate for a fixed number of minutes. The cost of phone calls can be reduced dramatically by using VoIP. Taking the advantage of low cost Internet access, Internet telephony reduces your long distance and overseas telephone costs to almost nothing but the charge of local calls.
There are a variety of devices that can take VoIP calls. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that allows you to connect your normal phone to a full telephone service via your broadband connection. VOIP offers the opportunity for business with multiple premises to eliminate call costs between stores.
There are many companies like Vonage, Lingo, and VoiceWing (Verizon) that offer VoIP lines.
The biggest drawback seen small businesses who wish to use VOIP is that when the electricity goes out they have no way to accept or to make telephone calls. If the electricity is out for any reason, and you only have a VOIP telephone system, then you will not have a phone system, unless you keep your landline for emergency purposes.
VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. Big businesses are already saving substantial money by installing IP networks and using VoIP protocol to transfer voice data.
Companies like Vonage, VoicePulse and Packet8 are already offering flat monthly fees for their VoIP services. The Linksys CIT 200 Portable phone for the Skype VoIP service may be a good choice phone and the best phone for you but do look around first before buying.
It's an interesting and useful device, but the answer is more complicated. You may be able to use your VoIP service wherever you travel as long as you have a high speed Internet connection available. VoIP protocol means that voice data is only sent over the network when it needs to be, freeing up that bandwidth when you arent making calls.
For homes and business considering connecting to broadband, using VoIP which is more and more frequently being bundled with the broadband service, is a way to offset the monthly connection cost.
